"This is exactly what I was hoping for. Silk like softness with insane breathability. I literally keep my AC 6 degrees warmer now and my wife is very happy about the new electric bill. Could not be better"

Why French Bulldogs Sleep So Much: Meet Gigi, BleuBully’s Sleepy Mascot

Why French Bulldogs Sleep So Much: Meet Gigi, BleuBully’s Sleepy Mascot

If you’ve ever visited the BleuBully website, you’ve probably met Gigi. She’s the adorable French Bulldog pictured throughout the site and the inspiration behind our sleeping Frenchie logo.

And if there’s one thing Gigi knows how to do, it’s sleep!

As an older Frenchie, Gigi spends approximately 17–18 hours a day sleeping or resting. That’s a lot of beauty sleep, but for a French Bulldog, it’s not entirely unusual. Frenchies are among the breeds best known for loving their naps, and Gigi is a perfect example of why.

How Much Do Dogs Sleep?

Most adult dogs sleep approximately 12–16 hours a day, depending on their age, breed, activity level, and overall health. Puppies and senior dogs often need even more. Unlike humans, dogs usually spread their sleep throughout the day, alternating between nighttime sleep and shorter naps.

Some breeds are naturally more laid-back than others, while giant breeds often need plenty of rest to recover from activity.

And then there’s Gigi, who seems to believe that a good day is measured in naps!

The 5 Dog Breeds Known for Sleeping the Most

There is no definitive scientific ranking of every dog breed by sleep duration, but several breeds are commonly recognized for their love of rest. Here are five of the sleepiest contenders, with Gigi proudly representing the French Bulldog.

1. English Bulldog

English Bulldogs are famous for being laid-back and love spending much of their day lounging. They can sleep around 14–18 hours a day, making them serious contenders in the sleepy-dog category.

2. Great Dane

Despite their enormous size, Great Danes are often gentle and relaxed. Many sleep approximately 16–18 hours a day, especially when they have a comfortable place to stretch out.

3. Mastiff

Mastiffs are another gentle giant with a serious appreciation for downtime. They commonly sleep around 16–18 hours a day and are perfectly happy relaxing after some activity.

4. Saint Bernard

Saint Bernards may be big and strong, but they are also big fans of naps. These gentle giants can sleep approximately 14–18 hours a day.

5. French Bulldog

And finally, our favorite little couch companion: Gigi’s breed, the French Bulldog!

French Bulldogs are commonly reported to sleep around 12–16 hours a day, with older dogs often sleeping considerably more. Gigi takes this to another level, enjoying approximately 17–18 hours of sleep or rest each day.

Her age, compact body, relaxed personality, and love of comfort all contribute to her impressive nap schedule. She may enjoy a little playtime, a short walk, or some attention from her favorite people, but eventually, Gigi knows exactly what she wants: another nap!

And honestly, we think she’s earned it.

Gigi’s Sleepy Breed Comparison

Breed Approximate adult sleep per day Known for
English Bulldog 14–18 hours Relaxed temperament and long naps
Great Dane 16–18 hours Gentle giant with a love of lounging
Mastiff 16–18 hours Calm personality and substantial rest needs
Saint Bernard 14–18 hours Large size and long recovery periods
French Bulldog 12–16 hours Frequent naps and a love of comfort

These are approximate ranges, not a definitive scientific ranking. Individual dogs may sleep more or less depending on age, health, activity, and lifestyle. Gigi’s 17–18 hours of sleep or rest is her own routine as an older Frenchie.

Why Frenchies Love Their Beauty Sleep

French Bulldogs were bred primarily as companion dogs, so they are generally happiest spending time with their people. They may enjoy a short walk, a little playtime, or a game of tug, but they are also perfectly content to curl up beside you afterward.

Their flat-faced anatomy can also make exercise more tiring, particularly in warm weather. That makes rest especially important for Frenchies, along with keeping them cool and comfortable.

Of course, every Frenchie is different. Some are energetic little clowns who seem to have endless zoomies, while others are professional loungers from morning until bedtime.

Gigi is definitely in the professional lounger category.

Gigi’s Favorite Place to Rest

When Gigi isn’t posing for the BleuBully website or inspiring our sleeping Frenchie logo, you can often find her doing what she loves most: snuggling up on BleuBully’s luxurious 100% TENCEL™ Modal bedding.

And really, who could blame her? Soft, silky bedding, a cozy spot, and a full day of naps sound like the perfect Frenchie lifestyle.

Gigi’s love of comfort is part of what makes her such a natural mascot for BleuBully. She reminds us that bedding isn’t just about how a room looks, it’s about creating a comfortable place to rest, recharge, and enjoy the little moments.

The Bottom Line

French Bulldogs may not have an official title as the single sleepiest dog breed, but they are certainly among the breeds best known for loving their naps. And Gigi, with her impressive 17–18 hours of sleep or rest each day, is living proof that Frenchies take their beauty sleep very seriously.

Whether your Frenchie is a playful little clown or a professional lounger like Gigi, one thing is almost guaranteed: when they’re ready for a nap, they want to be comfortable!

And honestly, who can blame them?

A happy Frenchie, a cozy bed, and a peaceful afternoon sound like a pretty perfect combination.
